How am I able to sign in securely online without a password?

Once you complete your OneID account set-up, your information is encrypted and stored locally on your computer using public key cryptography.

The keys required to unlock and release that information live in three places: your browser(s), the OneID cloud and - if you choose - your mobile device(s).

When you try to sign in at a OneID-enabled site, digital signatures are requested from at least two of those locations. With those signatures, you can sign in with a click. Without them, access is denied, keeping your information safe.

Let's talk details.

What is a digital signature and how is it better than today’s password-based system?

In technical terms, it is a mathematical scheme for demonstrating authenticity. In plain terms, it is much like a regular signature: very easy to use, very easy to verify, and very difficult to forge. It’s just like going to the bank, signing a check, and then the teller compares your signature to the signature they have on file before giving you the money. Only digital signatures are even harder to forge.

What is two-factor authentication and how is OneID’s method most secure?

For your most important transactions, like access to your bank account or high-value purchases, you (or the web site) want enhanced security. Two-factor authentication is simply the involvement of a second factor, usually a device, in the transaction. Most solutions are SMS-based which has multiple points of compromise. OneID uses secure, end-to-end digital signature protocols that remove today’s identity security vulnerabilities.

What happens if I lose one of my devices?

OneID does offer the capability to set a PIN or password for account access on a device for added protection. Even if you choose not to, you can simply go to your OneID control panel on another authorized device and lock or remove the device in question. That device no longer has any access to your OneID information whatsoever. If you realize you left your phone in the car and you find it, simply unlock the device in your control panel and it has full OneID privileges again.
